Both, depending on the claim. Brainwaves are real. EEG measures something real. Periodic sound produces a measurable response in the auditory system. None of those facts establish that pressing play produces focus. The gap between the solid part and the sold part is where most of the marketing lives.
The five claims sold hardestThe evidence does not settle it. A systematic review of 14 EEG studies found five consistent with entrainment, eight that conflicted with it, and one mixed. A meta-analysis across 22 studies of cognition, anxiety, and pain reported a moderate pooled effect while averaging very different problems, people, and methods together.
What the evidence actually showsThat is a fair reading, and most studies are not designed to rule it out. If ten quiet minutes is doing the work, the ten minutes are still worth taking. It would mean the frequency is not the active ingredient, which is a different claim from the one usually being sold.
It could contribute. Expectation affects self-reported outcomes across most of this literature. Whether it matters depends on what you are buying. If you want a reliable mechanism, placebo is a problem. If you want ten usable minutes before hard work, a benefit you notice is still a benefit, as long as nobody claims a mechanism the evidence does not support.
That a specific frequency produces a specific mental state. That audio outperforms a quiet break. That findings about meditation or EEG transfer to any particular product. Those cells in the evidence table are empty, and a page that will not tell you which ones are empty has told you something about the page.
Where the claims breakChange one thing at a time and write down what happened. Pick one task type, one time of day, and one measure you care about, such as when you actually started work. Run it with and without. Personal results are weak evidence in general, and the most relevant evidence for you specifically.
Where to be careful, and where to talk to a clinician instead of reading a website.
For most people, listening at a reasonable volume is low risk, and the main hazard is the one any headphone use carries. The WHO-ITU safe listening standard uses 80 decibels across 40 hours per week as an adult reference allowance, and risk depends on both level and time. A volume percentage on your phone does not tell you the actual level.
How to test audio safelyTalk to a clinician before use. Music-triggered seizures are a recognized but rare and highly individual form of reflex epilepsy. The available reports do not show that binaural beats cause seizures in the general population, and they do not implicate consumer beat frequencies. The precaution still stands.
Raise it with an audiologist or your clinician before adding regular headphone listening. Sustained tones may interact with tinnitus differently from person to person, and hearing devices change what reaches your ear. This is a question for someone who can assess your hearing, not one a general page should answer for you.
